Eau Claire Senior Center to Host Energy Efficient Light Bulb Sale

Reducing home utility bills is as simple as screwing in an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb. Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program is making it even easier by holding a special sale.

Focus on Energy is organizing the event in conjunction with its Change a Light, Change Wisconsin campaign, which promotes the financial, energy and environmental benefits of using ENERGY STAR qualified lighting products. A $2 instant Cash-Back Reward from Focus on Energy will allow area residents to purchase bulbs regularly priced at $2.99 for only $.99. There will be a purchase limit of 24 bulbs per customer.

With the winter heating season fast approaching and natural gas prices rising as much as 15 percent this year, Eau Claire area residents are looking for a variety of ways to reduce their energy bills, said Sara Van de Grift, program manager for Focus on Energy. Changing a light bulb is such a simple step, and it has a dramatic impact.

If every household in Eau Claire County replaced just one incandescent bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb, electric bills would be reduced by more than $1 million over the lifetime of the bulbs.

Those savings are possible because CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. Each CFL saves the user at least $30 in energy costs compared to standard incandescent bulbs.

By reducing energy consumption, CFLs also ease demand on the area's electrical system. Switching just one incandescent light bulb in every Eau Claire County household to an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL would reduce the area's annual energy consumption by more than 2.3 million kilowatt-hours -- enough to light 236 homes for one year.

As for environmental benefits, it would prevent 1,182 tons of coal from being burned each year and the annual release of nearly 5.7 million pounds of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That's the equivalent of removing the pollution from 382 cars in Eau Claire County.
